- Open Source Blockchain Development Critical to Standardization
Cloud Foundry Applications Runtime is an open source application development platform for cloud-native application. The platform is used and modified constantly to help organizations quickly gain access to the latest development technology.
The tool has been a part of the Cloud Foundry Foundation for three years. It was originally created at VMware in 2010 and then moved to Pivotal in 2013 before it was donated to Cloud Foundry.
The survey found that the open source platform gave developers more freedom and flexibility during the development process. The platform also aids development for organizations using containers.
Containers separate data based on predetermined characteristics. When migrating from one cloud storage model to another, it’s much easier to move data if it is contained in one place or separated from data that does not need to be moved.
A more flexible platform, in addition to the flexibility container already provided, gives developers more control over their application environment.
“For developers, it frees them up to do more of what they want to do—code,” survey authors explained. “For businesses, the benefit is more than just happier developers. The impact of Cloud Foundry’s open source platform is felt where it matters most—the bottom line. The shorter the time to market, the more immediate the benefits.”
The survey also discovered that velocity and productivity were improved when working with the open source platform. Cloud-native applications are produced faster, which allows organizations to deploy them quickly. Money is saved because not as many funds need to be spent on projects that don’t take as much time to complete.
It took survey respondents an average of three months to deploy a cloud application under traditional development methods, such as manual development, custom installation scripts, and configuration management tools.
Development times decreased dramatically after moving the applications to Cloud Foundry’s open source platform. Forty-six percent of respondents said that their average cloud-native app development cycle was under one week.
Maturity and Proliferation were also reported platform benefits, researchers explained.
Small and mid-market organizations are showing increased levels of adoption and nearly half of all users have only been using the platform for less than one year. Fifteen percent have been using it for five years.
“A plurality of Cloud Foundry Application Runtime users (61 percent) describe their deployments as somewhere in the early stages—trial, PoC, evaluation, or a partial integration into specific business units,” said report authors. “Meanwhile, 39 percent have deployed Cloud Foundry Application Runtime more broadly across their company, from total integration in specific business groups to company-wide deployment.
The Cloud Foundry Development Platform’s impact on organizations’ economy was the most significant benefit, according to the survey. The time saved by using this tool, in addition to a tangible ROI, made it appealing to many respondents.
Large enterprises reported approximately $20 million of savings to date since they deployed Cloud Foundry Application Runtime platform.
Healthcare organizations are discovering the benefits of open source application development platforms as the demand for custom applications rises. Open source gives healthcare organizations access to the most recent development tools and allows them to contribute their own code to the development process.
Entities seek solutions that allow them to both innovate and cut back on costs. As open source tools become more mature, they can be a good choice for future cloud-native application development.
