- Microsoft and Allscripts recently announced a five-year extension of their long-standing collaboration, which will expand the development and delivery of cloud-based health IT solutions.

The extension will support Allscripts cloud-based Sunrise electronic health record designed to help transform healthcare with more scalable technology.

Sunrise is an evidence-based single platform with integrated analytics centered around delivering better health outcomes in hospitals around the world.

Allscripts will be able to leverage Microsoft’s platform and tools, such as Microsoft Azure and Microsoft Teams and Power BI. Officials explained it’s designed to create a seamless and highly productive user experience.

“Through our strategic alliance with Allscripts, we aspire to be a transformational force in the healthcare industry, delivering smarter, innovative solutions that power the essential human connections of care delivery and create a healthier future for patients worldwide,” Patty Obermaier, Microsoft vice president of US health and life sciences, said in a statement.

“At Microsoft, we believe the future of healthcare is an interoperable one, where cloud-enabled solutions will be critical in putting patients fully in charge of their own healthcare information, she added.”

The platform will also offer a subscription model to deliver faster implementations and lower annual upgrade costs, while helping organizations leverage the software without increasing burdens on their internal IT resources.

Further, Sunrise will feature enhanced, security, scalability, and flexibility, along with new capabilities and expanded analytics and insights functionality.

Finally, the solution will include a marketplace that enables healthcare apps and third parties to easily integrate with a hospital EHR.

Allscripts clients will begin to see these updates by the end of 2020, Microsoft officials said.

“The COVID-19 pandemic will forever change how healthcare is delivered, and provider organizations around the world must ensure they are powered by innovative, interoperable, comprehensive and lower-cost IT solutions that meet the demands of our new normal,” said Paul Black, Allscripts CEO, said in a statement.

“Healthcare delivery is no longer defined by location — providers need to have the capability to reach patients where they are to truly deliver the care they require.” he added.   ““Cloud solutions, mobile options, telehealth functionality — these are the foundational tools for not just the future of healthcare, but the present.”

Throughout COVID-19, Microsoft has actively leveraged its cloud-based offerings to provide a safe and efficient care option during the pandemic.

At the end of May, Microsoft announced its first industry-specific cloud offering that allows organizations to engage in more proactive ways with their patients and gives caregivers the tools to improve workflow efficiency and streamline interactions.

The offering, Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare, will enrich patient engagement and connect health teams to improve collaboration, decision-making, and operational efficiencies.

It's currently available in public preview and through a free six-month trial.

Through enhanced patient engagement portals, patients can  access their self-service portal to make appointments and pay bills. Physicians and care teams can also create referrals, search for other providers, and understand physician spend, satisfaction, and enhanced analytics on referral categories through different patient outreach approaches.
