HHS explained that HCCNs are groups of health centers working together to better operational and clinical practices by making information technology simpler for providers and patients to use, boosting the cybersecurity of patient data, and employing data to improve patient outcomes.
"Improvements in information technology will enhance the patient and provider experience as health centers continue to deliver high quality primary care in underserved communities across the nation,” said HRSA Administrator George Sigounas.

$243M in Health IT Grants to Health Centers in FY11-FY17
According to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), HRSA awarded $243 million to health centers in order to improve their health IT infrastructure between fiscal years 2011 and 2017.
HRSA awarded the funding from the Community Health Center Fund (CHCF) under three grant programs: HCCNs, Beacon Communities, and delivery system health information investment.
The Beacon Communities program is administered by the Office of the National Coordinator for Heath Information Technology and provides funding to 17 selected U.S. communities with strong health IT infrastructure.
The delivery system health information investment supports strategic investments in health IT infrastructure to support improvements in patient care quality.
The HRSA awarded $15.8 billion in CHCF grants to health centers between fiscal years 2011 and 2017. Close to 80 percent of this funding went to ongoing operations at existing health centers, 7.6 percent was doled out to boost services provided at existing centers, 7 percent went to increase the number of health centers and sites, and 5.7 percent was allocated to special initiatives, such as the health IT infrastructure programs.
