May 13, 2019 - Google has selected 20 winners for its AI Impact Challenge, including six health AI projects.
Winners receive funding from a $25 million pool as well as coaching from Google AI experts and consulting from Google Cloud.
Google said it received applications from 119 countries with projects ranging from environmental to humanitarian. From these applications, it selected 20 organizations to support.

The six health projects are:
Eastern Health’s Turning Point center in Australia proposes to use AI to analyze ambulance clinical records to predict suicide trends and points of intervention to information public health response and policies.
Crisis Text Line in the United States proposes to natural language processing and data to optimize how it allocates texters to counselors for crisis counseling.
New York University will team with the New York City Fire Department to use AI to build models that will optimize first responder response to emergencies in New York City. AI will be used to predict such factors as weather, traffic, location, and type of emergency.
U.S.-based Nexleaf Analytics proposes to use AI to build models that predict vaccine degradation, quantify the value of vaccines at risks, and develop and end-to-end system to ensure safe and effective vaccine delivery.
France-based La Foundation Medecins Sans Frontiers proposes to use AI, image recognition, and smartphone app to help staff analyze anti-microbial images and provide appropriate patient treatment.
The Trevor Project in the United States proposes to use natural language processing and sentiment analysis to enable counselors to determine a LGBTQ youth’s suicide risk level and tailor services for patients.
The winners will also be offered the opportunity to join a customized six-month Google Developers Launchpad Accelerator program, including guidance from Google’s nonprofit partner DataKind to jump start their work.
