Individuals who have contracted COVID-19 will be enrolled in a 14-day interactive care plan through the patient portal. There, they can enter symptoms, temperature, and oxygen once a day. If any symptoms worsen during the time period, care providers will be notified and will reach out to the patient with additional information.
“The idea is for the patient to feel engaged in their healthcare and that somebody is watching over them – it gives them that extra level of comfort,” said Eric Boose, associate chief of Cleveland Clinic’s Medical Information Office.
“Using technology as part of the health care team is a big change for all of us during this pandemic, but it also gives us this great capability of keeping an eye on a larger amount of patients at one time, so that we can really focus on the ones that are having condition changes.”
Respiratory ventilators have been widely demanded during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Cleveland Clinic announcement also mentioned an additional launch of a new mobile app to help providers understand how to use the different types of ventilators available to them.
The app provides real-time, accurate information about the ventilator model they are using, which may have previously been new and unfamiliar to them.
“Think of ventilators like cars — there are many makes and models, but the main functions are the same,” said Jay Alberts, PhD, one of the app’s co-creators. “By entering information in this app, the caregiver can quickly understand how to operate that specific ventilator.”
The app, designed by Jay Alberts, PhD, David Schindler, Robert Chatburn, and Eduardo Mireles-Cabodevila, MD, the team at Cleveland Clinic, is now available to caregivers across the US.
At-home monitoring is critical during a pandemic, as it allows providers and patients to keep contact without meeting face-to-face and risking their own health.
At the end of April, Google Cloud created a Cloud Healthcare API to improve data interoperability and give providers real-time access to health data during COVID-19.
The Cloud Healthcare API makes it as simple as possible to help Google Cloud and its partner ecosystem to make informed, data-driven decisions, so that caregivers can focus on patient care, especially during COVID-19.
The API will ensure healthcare organizations manage data from various health systems and allows for safe and effective provider-data interaction using web-friendly, REST-based endpoints and health plans.
Health plans will be able to run a cloud-based FHIR server and provide capabilities needed to implement, scale, and support interoperability and patient access.
“We’re in a time where technology needs to work fast, securely, and most importantly in a way that furthers our dedication to our patients. Google Cloud’s Healthcare API accelerates data liquidity among stakeholders, and in-return, will help us better serve our patients,” John Halamka, MD, president of Mayo Clinic Platform said in the announcement.
The healthcare API has already been implemented at the Mayo Clinic but will soon be available to the industry at-large.
